MIGRAIN: Reception theory

According to reception theory, ‘the media attempts to transmit specific messages to audiences, but audiences are free to interpret these messages in a variety of ways – or even reject them’.

How valid are reception theory’s claims about audience responses? [25 marks]

Reception theory shows how the audience can interpret how they want to interpret the information and the most perceptive of the audience will identify the falseness in information if they are smart enough, the audience has only 3 choices, to read it and agree with what the media is saying even though it be biased, to look at what the media is saying and see how they can agree with what the media is saying and also disagree with what the media is saying because they find it biased and may know the actual truth, or to see how the media is trying to brainwash the audience and see how the media is biased and what they are doing is not the right thing. There is no other way to respond to information the media has given them. The way we know this is because some of us who see the news do not automatically look at what the media has presented to them and agreed straight away, there are critics out there that criticise what certain media outlets have presented and know the real truth. The audience may or not have an opinion at all and just ignore the information instead of trying to interpret the information which is what most people do anyways to certain parts of what the news outlet has shown. For example when seeing a news headline that Theresa May is a criminal, some people will see this and agree that Theresa May is a bad person and just agree with what the media outlet has told them, some people may look at this and see how Theresa May is a criminal but also do research and see how the same media outlet has exaggerated before and may have done it again, some people will see this and do research and see that Theresa May has done something petty and nothing really big such as steal a candy from a store when she was young. What is really important is that whatever the media has presented, we can only do 3-4 things depending on the situation but in order to show that whether the media has shown biased or unbiased information is to protest and for the real critics to boycott the media that has lied.
